Direct answer
There is no such thing as “the cost of getting married in Italy,” and no Italian government source publishes one. What exists instead is a set of separate, small official costs, each set by a different office, each published on its own page, with its own date. Comune ceremony-venue fees alone run from free to several thousand euro depending on the town, the room and the day of the week. Consular document fees are small flat charges. Apostille and legalization fees vary by office and, in two cases we checked, aren’t published at all.
This guide lists every official figure we could confirm, attributed to the specific comune, consulate or Procura and the date it was published. Where a figure isn’t published, we say so by name rather than estimate one. Nothing here covers vendors, venue rental for a reception, wedding planners or suppliers. That pricing doesn’t exist in comparable form on any government page, so it isn’t in scope for this guide.

Eleven of these twelve comuni are now fully re-verified. Positano is the one exception, with no current figure we could confirm. Use this map to see where each comune stands before reading its table.

Civil-ceremony venue fees, comune by comune
Every comune sets its own tariff for using the casa comunale (or a site it has designated as standing in for it; see our guide on where you can legally marry in Italy) for a civil ceremony. There is no standard schedule and no shared fee structure: some comuni charge nothing if a spouse is resident, some charge a flat rate regardless of residency, and some price by the room.
Eleven comuni below are shown with the full venue and audience-tier breakdown each one actually publishes, rather than a single summary figure: six re-fetched directly on 11 August 2026, and five more — Cortona, Montepulciano, Amalfi, Ravello and Siena — brought to the same depth on 12 August 2026. No two comuni use the same audience-tier structure, so each table below uses that comune’s own categories rather than a shared column layout that would force a false comparison. One further comune, Positano, has no current figure we could verify; its own note follows the eleven full tables rather than a summary row.

The tables show the fee when that isn’t the case, split into the comune’s own two ceremony-time windows. “Casa comunale esterni” covers six designated external locations at the same fee (per Deliberazione C.C. n. 114/2021 and Deliberazioni G.C. nn. 120/2022, 147/2022, 240/2022): Sala dell’Assedio (Complesso S. This section is sourced from a PDF file only, not from any comune.siena.it web page. Every HTML page checked on that domain — including the marriage-service page, the transparency-administration section and a corroborating news post — carries a documented, unremediated content-security compromise (hidden spam links, consistent with a February 2025 breach reported in local press). The tariff PDF itself is a separate, clean, static file, verified directly and unaffected by that issue. We link the PDF alone.

The same schedule separately authorizes four privately-owned structures for the ceremony, each at an identical €300.00 (Comune di Siena resident) / €500.00 (province, ex-resident or born in Siena) / €500.00 (outside the province or foreign) tier — Le Volte di Vicobello, Grand Hotel Continental, Palazzo De’ Vecchi and Villa Scacciapensieri. This is the comune’s own administrative fee only; the PDF doesn’t state whether the venue itself charges separately on top of it, so ask the specific property.
Positano
No current, trustworthy figure. The only public number (€1,000 weekday, €1,800 Saturday, for non-residents) is labelled “Tariffe per il 2024” and hasn’t changed since; the comune’s own dedicated wedding-service page has read “Servizio non attivo” at every check we could find dating back to March 2024, and carries no fee content of its own. We found no 2025 or 2026 wedding-tariff resolution in Positano’s public transparency register. Confirm the current fee directly with the Comune di Positano’s civil registry office before relying on the 2024 figure.

Read across the rows, not down a single column: there is no consistent “expensive comune” or “cheap comune,” because each one prices on a different basis. Do not compute a minimum, maximum or average across these twelve comuni — the range would be meaningless without each figure’s own conditions attached.
Document and consular fees
Before the comune will confirm a date, most non-resident couples need a document from their own country’s competent authority: for UK nationals, a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI); for US nationals, a Dichiarazione Giurata sworn before a consular officer, since no federal marriage registry exists to issue an equivalent certificate. For the UK route, the fee is published and dated. GOV.UK’s “Italy: consular fees” page, last updated 9 April 2025, states that issuing a Certificate of No Impediment at a British consular post, including the British Embassy in Rome, costs £50. The same schedule lists two related charges: £50 to administer an oath or declaration, and £150 to administer the oath for a full consular marriage.
For the US route, we are not publishing a figure. The only pricing we found for the Dichiarazione Giurata came from a US Embassy Italy page that failed independent verification during this research pass. On a live check, the domain was found to be serving broken links where earlier citations pointed, so we can’t stand behind a number sourced there. If a specific dollar figure matters to your planning, ask the Embassy or your nearest consulate directly for their current fee schedule for notarial acts; we would rather say nothing than repeat a figure we can’t currently verify.
Apostille and legalization fees
Once you have an Italian marriage certificate, an apostille may be needed to use it outside Italy. Which office issues it depends on what the document is: the marriage certificate itself is an administrative act signed by the civil registrar, so its apostille comes from the Prefettura; a sworn translation of it is treated as a notarial-type act, so its apostille comes from a Procura della Repubblica (Procura di Ravenna; Procura di Parma). We have a dated, directly stated fee for exactly one Prefettura: as of a 27 June 2024 revision, Prefettura Milano charges one €16 revenue stamp per document, processed by appointment (Ministero dell’Interno, Prefettura di Milano). Other prefetture set their own arrangements, and we have not found a published fee for any other one.
Procura fees are where the picture gets genuinely inconsistent, and we’re stating that plainly instead of smoothing it into one number:
- Procura della Repubblica di Tempio Pausania‘s own page states that apostille and legalization cost one €16 revenue stamp per document, paid on collection. The page carries no visible update date. Fee charged
- Procura della Repubblica di Forlì‘s page states the opposite: “La legalizzazione/apostille è gratuita e non prevede il pagamento di diritti”: legalization and apostille are free, with no fee charged at all. This page is also undated. No fee
- Procura di Roma and Procura di Ravenna both publish an apostille/legalization service page, and neither states a fee at all. Not stated
That’s three different answers from three different Procure to what looks like the same question: one office charges a stamp fee, one is explicitly free, and two simply don’t say. We checked this because it’s exactly the kind of figure a couple would reasonably expect to be standardised nationally, and it isn’t. Confirm directly with the specific Procura handling your document instead of assuming any of the figures above will apply to yours.
Why there is no average: what actually drives the variance
No Italian government body publishes an average or typical wedding-cost figure, and we checked deliberately for one. ISTAT’s official release on Italian marriages, published 19 January 2026, reports counts, rates, ages, citizenship and regional breakdowns, with nothing about cost in either direction. We did not find an equivalent figure from governo.it, the Ministero del Turismo, or any other Italian government source. Figures that circulate online claiming an “average cost of an Italian wedding” trace back to private wedding-industry market reports, not government data. We have not repeated any of them here: none of them tie to a specific comune, office and date, which is the bar every figure in this guide meets.
The table above shows what actually varies costs, and it isn’t a simple “which comune costs more” ranking:
- Residency. Whether either spouse is resident in the comune (or, in some cases, in Italy at all) is the single biggest swing factor. Rome, Verona, Cortona and San Gimignano all price residents at zero or a steep discount against non-residents.
- Which room or venue. Municipal room and venue tariffs can differ markedly within the same comune. Rome’s fee is set by residency and day of the week instead, not by which of its designated venues you book.
- Day of the week or season. Amalfi’s lowest and highest fees belong to different venues, not one venue across the calendar: the cheapest is a winter rate at the Ex Convento dei Cappuccini, the priciest a weekend rate at the Arsenale della Repubblica. Verona waives its fee entirely for residents at one venue, and only on Thursdays.
A couple choosing a non-resident Saturday wedding in a comune’s most requested room is comparing apples to oranges against a resident weekday booking in a plain municipal office. That holds even within the same comune, let alone across the twelve above. That’s why a single blended number would misrepresent the situation instead of simplifying it.
Before you rely on this
Every figure above is attributed to a specific comune, consulate or Procura and a specific date, and that date matters: tariffs are reviewed and changed, sometimes annually, and a page we read in 2025 or 2026 may not reflect the current fee by the time you read this. Confirm the live figure with the office itself before you rely on it for a budget, particularly for the comuni above whose tariff pages are PDFs or ordinances rather than a page updated in the last year.
The Procura fee lines in particular carry no visible publication date on the source pages themselves, which is why we’ve flagged them as undated instead of presenting them with the same confidence as a dated comune tariff. Undated does not mean wrong. It means we can’t tell you how current it is, so treat it as a starting point for a direct inquiry, not a locked-in number.
