Planning a wedding in Croatia

Direct answer

Foreign citizens can marry in Croatia under the conditions stated by the Croatian Ministry. Start with the Registry Office, or matični ured, responsible for the place where the legal ceremony is intended. That registrar must confirm the document form, translation, authentication, nationality evidence, appointment and location before a booking depends on the marriage being legally completed there.

Croatia’s national page names a foreign birth record, single-status evidence and confirmation that there is no obstacle to the marriage and that it will be recognised in the applicant’s state of citizenship. The last item cannot be safely reduced to one US/UK checklist: the home-country source and Croatian registrar must be checked together.

Start with the registrar for the intended place. A venue, planner or symbolic celebrant cannot confirm which evidence that Registry Office will accept or make a private place suitable for the civil ceremony.

The four questions to settle

Which ceremony creates the marriage?

Croatia’s official marriage route covers a civil ceremony before a registrar and a religious form with civil effect through an eligible religious community. The current official page defines marriage as between a woman and a man. The Ministry publishes a separate life-partnership route for same-sex couples; ask the registrar for that process rather than applying the marriage Guide to it.

Which office holds the register?

Notice of a civil marriage goes to the registrar competent for the intended ceremony location. The ceremony takes place with the couple, registrar and two witnesses. Choosing a place does not by itself confirm the registrar’s approval, attendance or outside-office fee.

What is required beforehand?

The national foreign-citizen page names the document categories but sends detailed questions to the selected Registry Office. British citizens have an official GOV.UK Croatia CNI route. The US government says it cannot attest to marital status, so a US applicant must ask the registrar what evidence satisfies Croatia’s requested confirmation.

What proves the marriage afterwards?

The Civil Registrar for the locality where the marriage occurred issues the Croatian marriage record. A marriage certificate, register extract and international version exist. The institution using the record later decides which form, translation or authentication it accepts.

Use the focused Guides

Before you commit

Start with Croatia’s registrar-first foreign-citizen Guide. For guests, use Croatia wedding entry checks for US and UK travellers. After the ceremony, read how a Croatian marriage record may be used in US and UK processes.

This family does not assess venues, vendors, planners, availability, packages, islands, reception prices or a Registry Office’s appointment capacity. You can start a private planning checklist without entering guest or document data here.
