Direct answer
Three kinds of ceremony create a legal marriage in Italy: a civil ceremony before the Ufficiale dello Stato Civile, a Catholic ceremony transcribed under the Concordat, and a ceremony before a minister of a religious denomination that holds a formal agreement with the Italian state. A symbolic or celebrant-led ceremony does not, and nothing is filed or registered afterwards.
Many couples marry legally at home and hold their ceremony in Italy separately. That is a reasonable choice. It causes problems only when a couple assumes the Italian ceremony was the legal one.
If you marry validly in Italy, you are already married in the UK and the US. There is no home registration step waiting for you. What you may need is a certified copy of the Italian certificate, sometimes carrying an apostille, when an institution asks you to prove the marriage.
What changes from town to town
Italy has no single national checklist. The civil status office of the comune where you marry applies the rules for the selected route, sets its own fees, and identifies the rooms it will use. Published tariffs vary by town, room, residence status and day. The official-costs guide labels each figure with its comune and source date.

Confirm the specifics with the comune where you intend to marry, and with your own consulate. Requirements and fees can differ between neighboring towns, so treat these guides as the questions to ask rather than a checklist to submit.
